halfway up her thighs. She was wet and cold, and she started to shiver. “You wouldn’t believe it, Daddy,” she sniffled to the
stone. “It’s been too wet to finish the siding on the small houses.
We’ve had to cover them in tarps, and Clara is talking
unemployment for the trim crew if the insulation and drywall
subs don’t get started soon.”
She paused as if waiting for an answer, but all she heard was quiet hanging in the air. “The Gumbel house is stalled out, too, waiting for the electrical and heating guys. This weather has everybody backed up.
“And Tommy isn’t helping at all,” she continued. “He’s just making things worse with his planning and scheming.” There was still no reply. “But I haven’t forgotten my promise to you, Daddy.” She could never forget it. It was nailed to her heart as surely as if it had been driven there by a hammer.
